What is the difference between industrial sulfuric acid and reagent sulfuric acid?

Industrial grade sulfuric acid contains impurities and its purity is uncertain. It may contain heavy metals, ash, chlorine, and sulfur dioxide. Industrial grade sulfuric acid

The raw material for industrial sulfuric acid production is usually pyrite, which is composed of FeS2 and ground. It is burned in a combustion furnace to generate Fe2O3 and SO2 gas.

4FeS2+11O2==2Fe2O3+8SO2 (gas)

SO2 continues to oxidize to SO3 in the presence of a catalyst (usually V2O5)

2SO2+O2==2SO3

SO3 can be absorbed with water to generate sulfuric acid. It can be imagined how many impurities may be mixed in this process.

The production process of reagent sulfuric acid is different from industrial sulfuric acid. It can be obtained by heating and distilling industrial sulfuric acid in quartz vessels, which means there is no possibility of any impurities being added. However, due to the higher energy consumption of this method, its price is also more expensive.

The purity of reagent sulfuric acid is high, and the impurity content is almost zero. It is specifically used for chemical experiments and analysis.

Generally, industrial sulfuric acid is divided into three types: 93%, 98%, and 105%. The purity is not very high, and the impurity content is higher. The impurity composition is also very complex. However, it can be widely used in industries such as fertilizers, metal extraction, leather neutralization, electroplating pickling, and so on.
